Five for Friday is a weekly teacher linky party where bloggers post five random things about the past week. This linky party is hosted by Doodle Bugs Teaching, so if you’re curious to see lots of fun teaching ideas, hop on over to this website.
Here are my 5 special things from this week…
I attended an awesome webinar on numeracy and math skills for preschoolers and kindergartners: “Teaching Numeracy to Young Children: A Responsive and Differentiated Approach”, presented by Brian Mowry. The ideas presented were great, especially a restaurant dramatic play area that helps kids learn about cardinality and subitising (I’ll make one too, but not with the McDonald’s logo).
We re-read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, and then we acted the story out with paper characters and props. The kids had a blast!
I finally had some time to post “The Cutting Song” on the blog. I wrote it a while ago, because some of my kids had trouble with holding scissors properly.
A couple of months ago I attended a webinar on teaching music to kids presented by Abigail Flesch Connors. She had lots of great examples of easy songs (suitable even for EFL/ESL learners). One of them is “Shake your Shaker” that we learned this week.
(Tune: London Bridge Is Falling Down)
Shake your shaker up and down,
Up and down, up and down,
Shake your shaker up and down,
Up and down today.
Then replace “up and down” with “left and right”, “round and round”, “in a circle”, etc. The kids can come up with their own ideas!
We rearranged the furniture in our classroom, to make more room for our morning circle area. It was a lot of work, but at least now the kids can dance, move around, and have fun.
So…how was your week? 🙂
