I’m a fan of teaching children about recycling, reusing objects, and reducing waste. I think they need to be aware of environmental changes and how they could contribute to making the world a better place.
In order to teach children about compost (also empathy and responsibility), we made a worm farm. We actually bought it from the Helsinki Recycling Centre, but then transferred the worms and the soil to an aquarium. After some time, we will use the compost over flowerbeds, to give plants more nutrients.
We will soon add more soil for the worms to move freely in. We just brought the worms to the kindergarten today. An important fact to keep in mind is that worms are nocturnal, so they will be more active if you cover the container with black paper.
The kids are free to observe the worms in the science centre. They have a spray bottle and magnifying glasses. They can take a worm out (only one at a time!), but carefully handle it. We have a helper who can feed the worms, to make sure that all kids will get a turn.
I found this great printable with pictures and clear instructions on what to feed worms and why to avoid certain food.
Now I’m off to reading more info about these tiny creatures. I’m so excited! 🙂
